Strengthening Procurement of EV Battery Materials

Global partnership

Accelerate a circular society

In April 2021, we formed the Battery Team to create multifaceted business opportunities in the industries of electric vehicle (EV) batteries and accumulators.
The market for lithium-ion batteries for EV is expected to expand, and we are handling raw materials for its production. We are increasing our involvement in all aspects of the supply chain, including the purchase and sale of battery-related products and the recycling of batteries.
We are also actively investing in this field, such as participating in a large-scale project to manufacture the nickel-cobalt compound that is required for the cathode of secondary batteries.

Graphite is a raw material used for the anode of lithium-ion batteries, and graphite extracted in China accounts for approximately 70% of its global production.
We hold a major share in Japan in handling a nickel compound that is a raw material for cathodes. As for anode materials, demand will increase, and there is a risk in having China be the singular source. Considering such factors, we are seeking to procure from other regions, and we have agreed to work with Renascor Resources, which is planning a production plant for spherical graphite in Australia.
